Currently he has two non-fiction works-in-progress, The Convoy - ONS5 and the Last Stand of the Wolfpacks, the story of how, in May 1943, Convoy ONS5 became the turning point of the Battle of the Atlantic, and Tank! The Battle of Arracourt, September 1944. The Blade Files series of novels, a collaboration with Scott Bragg, is his first foray into science-fiction.

Educated at Hope College, Grand Valley State University, and the University of Erlangen (FAU), Butler eventually became a full time author after a stint in the United States Army and later working as a wage-slave. He's been a popular guest-speaker on military and maritime subjects, having given presentations at the National Archives in Washington DC; the Mariners Museum in Newport News, the Kalmar Nyckel Foundation, and the Flagler Museum in Palm beach, as well as various venues in the United Kingdom. He also often appears in the on-board enrichment series of several cruise lines, including Cunard, Royal Caribbean, and the Norwegian Cruise Line. When not writing, he's a woodworker, gearhead, and model builder, noted for his love of single malt whisky and Honduran cigars.
