Point of View: Get It Right
While pronouns are the most visible indicator of viewpoint, they are only the most elementary of building blocks. Narrative and temporal distance, filters, voice, and ultimately, depth, have far more to do with viewpoint in storytelling than pronouns. Readers may not be able to articulate the importance of viewpoint to their immersion and willingness to stay with a story, but problems with viewpoint will still cause them to put your story down. In this class we will cover how viewpoint can grab a reader, immerse them in your story, flesh out characters, worldbuild, create tension and conflict, and ultimately help you show a better a story.

What Physicists Don’t Know About Electromagnetism
Hans G. Schantz presents. In the 1940s, physicists and engineers alike used Stratton’s Electromagnetic Theory as their text. They learned about such applied topics as simple antennas, waveguides, arrays, even radio wave propagation over the earth. Today, physicists use Jackson’s Classical Electrodynamics. There’s still material on simple antennas and waveguides, but nothing on arrays and the only practical case of radio wave propagation mentioned is Schumann resonances. Meanwhile radio scientists and electromagnetic engineers have taken Schelkunoff’s concept of “impedance” and put it to work in a host of practical applications understanding transmission and reflection of microwave signals. They’ve worked out link laws that describe what fraction of energy makes it from a transmitter to a receiver, or reflects from a target in a radar system. They’ve worked out fundamental equations for physical limits on the size and performance of small antennas. What else don’t physicists know about electromagnetism? And what implications does it have for our understanding of how the world works? Find out in this talk!

Cat Mischief & Outflanked Playtesting - David Sherrer
Game Developer David Sherrer will host Playtesting New Games from Chenoweth Press: Cat Mischief and Outflanked. Cat Mischief is a 4 to 10 player game. If you know how to play Cat Magic there are no new rules for Cat Mischief, there are only new cards. Outflanked can be taught in just a couple minutes and takes 5 to 10 minutes to play a round. Outflanked is a simple game of complex strategy. Outflanked is an adversarial game where 2 to 4 players compete to capturing a larger total area of the board with their cards than the opponent. As the game progresses, the players position cards on the board to map out territory while trying to limit the other players options. The game is over when any player can no longer play cards.

Death By Failure to Communicate
Karl Gallagher will present: Death By Failure to Communicate - It's not enough to put the data in the report, your audience has to understand it. A useful discussion for working engineers that illustrates how not properly communicating with people can lead to deaths. Non-engineers will appreciate the story behind the disasters. Focus will be on three case studies: 1. Space Shuttle Challenger Disaster: Showing the actual slides Morton Thiokol presented to NASA and how they didn't get the message across. Will compare this to the graph Prof. Feynman created to emphasize the key issue. 2. Space Shuttle Columbia Disaster: Showing the actual NASA internal powerpoint which led them to dismiss the danger of heat shield damage. 3. Surfside Condominium Collapse: Showing the actual engineering report given to the condo board, and how it didn't emphasize the danger in terms the condo board would understand.

Fermi Paradox and the Rare Earth Hypothesis
Mark Haynes will present a fascinating discussion on the Fermi Paradox and Rare Earth Hypothesis. If there is intelligent life in the Universe then where are they? Let's examine the evidence supporting these two hypotheses. This will be an open panel discussion. We will stick to these two concepts. So that means inter-dimensional aliens who live in the sun are off the table. That’s for another panel. The Fermi paradox is the conflict between the lack of clear, obvious evidence for extraterrestrial life and various high estimates for their existence. The Rare Earth hypothesis suggests that the very unique conditions of Earth that allowed complex life to arise and flourish are exceptionally uncommon — and they’re unlikely to widely occur throughout the universe.
